Her forth chapter is called;

Discipline Is Not a Bad Word

Discipline is not a bad word, but it’s also (usually) not fun either; that’s what makes it so hard.  Discipline is working out when you’d much rather watch TV.  Discipline is getting up before everyone else to get a jump start on the day, even if you were up a while with a child.  Discipline is skipping the candy and eating vegetables instead.

It’s hard, it’s not fun, but it’s necessary to be successful.  If it wasn’t so hard, everyone would do it.  Because it’s so hard, getting a good grasp of what she suggests in Chapter 3, is essential.  When you have pared down your big goals into tiny baby steps, it’s usually much easier to motivate yourself to take that one next (tiny) step.

When I write my goals down and divide them up, I can usually talk myself into continuing.  My self talk is usually something to the extent of, “You can do (such and such) for 15 minutes, it’s not that long.”  It’s not too difficult to endure something “unpleasant” for 15 minutes or so.  Then, I have the mindset of, if 15 minutes is all I get done, at least it’s better than nothing.  However, I have found that barring any interruptions (which of course never happens to a mother), usually by the time the 15 minutes is up, I’m motivated by the progress that I usually keep going.  For me, it’s getting over the “hump” and actually getting started that’s the hardest.  I usually want to be selfish and immature and “do what I want to do, when I want to do it!”  😉

Like I mentioned in another post, if it’s important enough to you, you will find the motivation and the will-power to get it done, no matter what the excuses you used in the past.  I believe that Dave Ramsey has said something to the extent of; “People usually only change when the pain of same is greater than the pain of change.”

So write down your goals, post them all over the house and when you need a motivation boost, set a small (but realistic) time limit and talk yourself into it.  Good luck!

Quotes

My favorite quotes from this chapter were:

  • “Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment.”  -Jim Rohn
  • “The bottom line is if you’re not willing to put forth effort, you’re never going to get very far in life.” (Something we are struggling to teach our oldest right now!)
  • “We are what we repeatedly do; excellence then is not an act, but a habit.” -Aristotle
  • “Big progress begins with small changes.”
  • “Intentionally making one consistent habit change can slowly lead to amazing transformation in many areas of your life.”
