Arguing

Arguing! This is one area where I need some help! My second child will argue with a brick wall and probably win! My third isn’t quite as bad, but can still give me a run for my money! Love and Logic has the following suggestions when it comes to arguing:
1. Whisper, “I love you too much to argue.” (My second gets very aggravated when I say this, but now all I have to do is say it, at the most, two times, and he sighs and walks away!)
2. Play brain dead, smile & pause (I forget about this one, I don’t think I’ve ever tried it)
3. Choose an empathetic one liner (I use “I know” a lot and my son will get aggravated and say “Will you stop saying that?”)
4. Keep repeating the one liner over & over (with sadness instead of anger)
5. Walk away if child continues (153)

I usually get very frustrated and end up walking away or telling my son, “Kids who argue can go to their room!” He is getting better as he gets older (or as we’re more consistent with how we deal with it, or both) and will usually only try a couple of times and then gives up!

Thanks for posting this. I have been meaning to check that book out.
My 7 year old likes to “negotiate” AKA argue.
I have been using “That’s 5” when he does it. (5 mins off his bedtime because he cares about that). It usually gets him to stop.
But I like those ideas too.
