Chapter 6 is titled: Oils of Joy.
The main focus of this chapter is explaining how our sense of smell is the only 1 of our 5 senses that is wired into our brains differently. Our sense of sight, taste, touch, and hearing are all wired to travel to the frontal lobe of the brain first and then to the emotional brain. The sense of smell is wired the other way around, thus reaching the emotional brain first and then the frontal lobe. This is why scents bring up so many memories! This is also the reason why the author believes that the majority of our illnesses are due to emotions. “Emotions that we have faced, accepted, and dealt with are stored as intellectual memories. Such emotions are resolved and we have grown spiritually through the experiences that brought them to our awareness. We can recall such memories in detail, but they do not control us, give us pain, or make us sick” (pg. 116). A few pages later, on page 119 he states, “It is also worth noting that a state of cheerfulness is elevating to the immune system, helping to protect you from many illnesses. Thus, our emotional state is a key element to our state of health and to the healing of disease.”
It’s inferred that “the Biblical writers may not have understood how aromas feed directly to the emotional brain, but they knew by experience, led by God, that certain perfumes, ointments, and incenses brought joy to their hearts, relieved their stresses, brought them peace and calmness, clarified their thinking, uplifted their spiritual awareness and assisted them in their prayers, worship, and daily living” (pg. 117).
“Ointment and perfume rejoice the heart.” (Proverbs 27:9)
