Materials
- different colored apples
- pot
- big Venn diagram
- Johnny Appleseed book
Procedure
- Read Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg
- tell the children that someone special is coming to visit and that you have to go get them
- go into the hall or another room, roll up pant legs, put the pot on your head, and grab the sack of apples
- go back to the children, pretending like you are Johnny Appleseed, hand each child an apple and instruct them NOT to eat it, exit the room
- go back to the other room/hallway and unroll your pants and put the pot away
- go back to the children and say that you couldn’t find the guest and ask them how they got their apples
- get out the Venn diagram and have the students stand around it
- sort the apples by size
- ask the children if they can think of another way to sort the apples
- sort the apples by color, shape, stems/no stems, bumps/no bumps, etc
- collect the apples to use for another activity
- read another Johnny Appleseed book for closure
