Materials
- celery
- sharp knife
- red food coloring
- vase of water
- copies of worksheet
- materials to complete the worksheet
Procedure
- read
- show the kids the vase of water and put the food coloring in (do the experiment on page 33 in )
- explain how a plant “drinks” water (roots are like straws)
- show the children the celery and ask them what color it is
- cut the end of two-three stalks off, pass it around and have the kids look at the dots on the bottom, those are their “straws”
- place the celery in the vase of colored water and place it in a safe, but visible place
- read
- have the children do the worksheet on how a pumpkin grows (available in many teacher themed books)
- review the life cycle of a pumpkin
- come back to the celery in about an hour and discuss observations
