Pumpkins

Materials

  • celery
  • sharp knife
  • red food coloring
  • vase of water
  • copies of worksheet
  • materials to complete the worksheet

Procedure

  1. read
  2. show the kids the vase of water and put the food coloring in (do the experiment on page 33 in )
  3. explain how a plant “drinks” water (roots are like straws)
  4. show the children the celery and ask them what color it is
  5. cut the end of two-three stalks off, pass it around and have the kids look at the dots on the bottom, those are their “straws”
  6. place the celery in the vase of colored water and place it in a safe, but visible place
  7. read
  8. have the children do the worksheet on how a pumpkin grows (available in many teacher themed books)
  9. review the life cycle of a pumpkin
  10. come back to the celery in about an hour and discuss observations
