Chapter 12 is titled Extracting Essences in Biblical Times.  If I remember correctly, it was a rather dry chapter.  He does mention extracting processes of today as well.

Obviously, in Biblical times, they extracted oils very differently than we do today.  Cedarwood was one of the first oils to be extracted by the Egyptians and Sumerians (p. 167).

Quick Facts from Chapter 12

  • “Essential oils are the water immiscible, lipid soluble portion of the plant juices that give it fragrance, flavor, character, and life.” (163)
  • “Essential oils are found in leaves, stems, roots branches, bark, flowers, fruits, and oleo-gum-resins.” (163)
  • Distillation causes concentration of oil by 50 to 100 times.  (163)
  • The oils concentrations and size  are the reason they can “interact positively with cellular intelligence, plus their ability to make direct  contact with our emotions and awaken past memories, sets them apart from all other natural medicines.” (165)
  • Steam distillation was the best method in Biblical times.
  •  “Maceration was an ancient method of extracting essential oils by immersing plant material in a heavier oil or fat, thus dissolving the lipid soluble portion of the plant fluid.” (167)
  • “…expressed essential oils were unknown in Biblical times. ” (169)
  • Citrus fruits and trees were unknown during Biblical times.  (169)
  • Pressing oils was used only for fatty oils during Biblical times. (169)
  • “…sometimes a combination of maceration and pressing was used.  The process is called enfleurage and is one of the most ancient of methods.” (169)

Modern Times

  • “Perfume and flavoring industries, who produce more than 90% of the essential oils used today, like to use high temperature, high pressure distillation techniques because they are more economical.  However, this process destroys the therapeutic properties of the oil and makes it unfit for healing purposes.” (176)
  • Chemical solvents used to distill
  • Carbon dioxide distillation (177)
