 Review

I’m not really sure what I expected when I picked up this book, but it was definitely different than what I had anticipated.  It was really nice to see how much the life of a mother parallels with Jesus’ life.  It has given me a little different perspective on motherhood.  It also cemented many beliefs that I already had.  It really made me realize that taking care of myself needs to be a higher priority because that affects my marriage, my children, my relationships with others, the way I parent and relate to my children and every other aspect of life.

I thought that I would read this book much faster than what I did.  I usually like to read 4-5 chapters a week.  I found that I really liked to read a chapter and then “digest” it for a couple of days before continuing on.  This gave me more time to take it to heart, soak it in, and really live the parallels.

My favorite chapters were 1, 3, 4, & 10.

The story on pages 187-191 made me cry.

I would recommend this book to any mother, especially the mother who has figured out that motherhood is much harder than anticipated, isn’t what she thought it would be, and the mother who doesn’t take time for herself.

Quotes

There are so many amazing quotes in this book.  I have highlighted over 20 I want to try and read on a weekly basis!

23: “A mother who does everything for the family and expects nothing from them will raise children who grow up and have no sense of responsibility.

54: Being quiet and patient takes a lot more energy than losing it and screaming.  It seems like it would be the other way around, but self-control takes energy.

58: Looking at Jesus’ life, however, I’ve come to understand that while there were many people who needed Him, He didn’t meet all of the needs around Him.

81: Child-centered parenting trends communicate to the child that they are the center of their universe.  This unfortunately sets the child up to be a self-centered adult who doesn’t understand the sacrifice needed to have a successful marriage or be a successful parent.  Even basic manners are affected when we don’t understand our responsibility to other.

93: We live in a society that thrives on defending rights rather than owning actions.

158: Emotionally healthy people are more successful in their parenting, their marriages, and their relationships in general.
