Be Intentional with Your Bank Account

Setting and living by a budget can be daunting at first.  I know, I felt very overwhelmed the first time I tried it.  However, after all the kinks have been worked out, it’s very freeing.  Not having to worry if there will be more month at the end of your money is a huge stress reliever.  When you are not overly stressed, you are better able to handle whatever life throws at you.  It’s also extremely gratifying and peaceful when you are able to give.  Now creating a budget and abiding by it takes practice, patience (and lots of it), and discipline!  I remember getting very discouraged the third and fourth months that I did a budget because I thought that I should have it down better and faster than what I did.  Baby steps.  Expect for there to be holes in the budget and many categories under budgeted.  Work with it and after a few months, I promise, things will get better.  We took

and have loved it.  It truly transformed our lives!  I even have a section on my blog where I blog about our financial journey.  Will you be able to buy everything you want once you do a budget, probably not, that’s highly unlikely.  There will still be sacrifices that will have to be made, but at least you won’t have to worry about if there will be enough money for food at the end of the month.  Set your priorities and live them.

Even though we have climbed out of debt, we do still slip back into our old habits every once in a while.  At least I know how to climb out!  Some tips that I would love to give are: make sure you have a “fun” and a “miscellaneous” category.  Once we implemented these sections (even if it was only $5 in each category), we really started to succeed and make headway.  Expect to work at it and expect for the first couple of budgets to be flops!  But learn from your mistakes and gallop on.

I’d love to get to a place where we can have some rentals that we can rent to people who need some help getting back on their feet.  For some reason, I feel called to do this and just wish I could do it now!

Telling your money where to go is not as restricting as many think.  It actually has quite the opposite effect!  🙂

Quotes

My favorite quotes from this chapter were:

  • “We learned that a strong marriage is not built on how much money we have, but on the depth of your love and commitment to one another.”
  • “Sacrifice is a part of life.  It’s supposed to be.  It’s not something to regret.  It’s something to aspire to.” -Mitch Albom
  • “Here’s the beautiful thing about a budget: while it’s hard and limiting at first, over time, you’ll realize that it’s your means to enjoy life without headaches and worry.”
  • “When you make your money work for you, you have more to work with.”
  • “Let’s live simply so that others can simply live.”
