Give Children the Gift of Thinking
“Questions cause children to think. Commands cause children to resist.” (106) On page 106 Fay & Cline say that there are 5 steps to do when making children think. These steps are to start with empathy, ask them what they are going to do, (if they do not know) ask them if they would like suggestions from you, give 3 suggestions and after each suggestion ask the child how that suggestion would work, then let the child choose!
Other ways to make kids think is to suddenly have an energy drain and to delay consequences. They suggest 3 steps for delaying consequences:
1. “I’ll have to do something about this, but not now, try not to worry.”
2. Put together a plan that fits misbehavior
3. Deliver consequences w/ lots of empathy
