Healthy vs. Unhealthy

The resources I have are a little out of date since they have changed the food pyramid to a plate!  🙂  Even when I taught, I had resources for the original food pyramid, so I just explained that how they show the information has changed, but the information is still the same.

Materials

  • songs downloaded from dole5aday (scroll down to get all of the amazing songs, my students LOVED these songs)
  • Healthy & Unhealthy Labels
  • pictures of food

Procedure

  1. listen to two songs from www.dole5aday.com
  2. ready
  3. take out the food pictures, hold them up one at a time and have the students tell you what they are
  4. tell the students that you need their help to sort the food
  5. put the Healthy and Unhealthy labels on the floor about a foot apart
  6. pass out a food picture to each child
  7. call the students up individually, have them say what they have and put it under the correct label on the floor
  8. have the other students who are sitting at their desk give you a thumbs up or down if they agree or disagree
  9. repeat steps 7 & 8 until every child has put their food card on the floor
  10. ask the students what they should eat more of; if it’s alright to eat a few unhealthy foods or a lot
  11. pick up while listening to more songs
