Children usually behave better when they have a sense of control (Control- the more we give the more we get (82)).  To provide a Healthy Sense of Control you should give choices, give most of them when things are going well and on issues that are not important or dangerous.  Offer 2 options you can be happy with and wait about 10 seconds for them to process and respond!
