Shapes

 

When I taught shapes, I usually covered the following shapes:

  • circle
  • square
  • rectangle
  • triangle
  • oval
  • heart
  • diamond
  • star

I usually took one day to teach each shape

 

Materials

Sing to Learn CD

shape book (listed below)

shape papers (construction paper that has the shape on it)

 

Steps

  1. play song #10 on CD
  2. read the shape book
  3. one at a time, have the child(ren) tell you something that is the shape
  4. write the word and draw a picture of what the child says on the board/paper
  5. repeat steps 3 & 4 until every child has had a turn
  6. give the child(ren) the shape paper and have them trace it with their finger
  7. have them trace it with their pencil
  8. have them cut the shape out
  9. have the child(ren) take care of their trash
  10. review the shape

 

Extensions

  • go outside and draw the shape with chalk
  • give the child(ren) a digital camera and go on a shape walk and have them take pictures of things that are that shape
  • go on a shape scavenger hunt
