The Grain Group

These are the books that I made for each child for Nutrition theme.

The Grain Group

Materials:

  • songs from dole5aday
  • The Grain Group by Helen Frost
  • Food Pyramid books
  • crayons
  • pencils
  • white board
  • white board markers

(child drew a picture of rice)

Procedure:

  • listen to two songs from dole5aday (make sure one is the Grain song)
  • read Grain Group book
  • as a class, make a list of foods in the grain group, draw a picture and label on the white board
  • have the children go to their seats and get out crayons and pencil as Food Pyramid books are being handed out
  • model writing your name on the model Food Pyramid book
  • have the children write their name on their book
  • model turning the model book to the first page (orange highlighted page); draw a picture and label it from the white board in the orange section of the Food Pyramid book
  • have the children do the same in their book
  • to check for understanding, have the children come up to you with their book when they have finished their page and tell you what they drew
  • collect the books
  • review foods in the grain group
  • listen to two more songs from dole5aday

Extra Activities:

  • make a graph of the students’ favorite food in this category
  • bake bread
  • visit a pasta shop/restaurant and watch how they make pasta

As you know by now, the pyramid has been changed to a plate.  You could do the same steps, but make a plate book instead.

I cannot find the series of books I have on this subject, here is what I have found:
