Winter/Not Winter

I usually started out January teaching about Winter.

Materials

  •  book
  • signs (Winter and Not Winter)
  • pictures or miscellaneous items (snowflakes, ice skates, rain boots, umbrella, mittens, swimsuit, leaves, coat, rainbow, flower, shovel, shorts, hat, scarf, sled, swimming pool, snowman, etc)

Steps

  1. Play song #22 on
  2. Read
  3. get out signs and place them on the floor
  4. pull out a picture or an item out of the bag, say what it is, what it’s used for, and place it under the correct sign (for example if you pulled out a sled, you would put it under the Winter sign)
  5. have each child have a turn at step #4
  6. talk about other things that could be added, which side has more, could some of the items be in both categories, etc
  7. Read  book for closure

Notes

  • using picture cards (that I made on the computer) is faster and easier, especially in a classroom setting
  • using real items is much more fun
  • I usually did a combination: picture cards and real items
  • it is fun to have the kids go on a scavenger hunt to find things to sort (make sure to put out certain items in advance)
